BRAND STORY

The origins of Walkers trace back over a century, to 1898 in the picturesque Scottish Highlands, where a determined twenty-one-year-old named Joseph Walker launched his bakery with a modest £50 loan and an ambitious dream: to craft the finest shortbread the world had ever seen. Throughout that crucial first year, Joseph tirelessly refined his shortbread recipe during every spare moment, and his dedication paid off. As word spread about his exquisite shortbread, demand surged, prompting Joseph to expand his operations. He relocated to a more extensive shop in the Speyside village of Aberlour and acquired a horse-drawn cart to distribute his baked goods to a broader audience.

The 1930s marked a period of growth for both Joseph's family and his bakery. Two of his sons, Joseph and James, joined the company, injecting fresh ideas into the business. By 1936, they had successfully diversified their offerings to include a selection of cakes, candies, and even the company’s first delivery van, enhancing visibility and accessibility. Notably, while some bakers started cutting costs by opting for margarine instead of butter, Joseph remained committed to quality, believing consumers valued the painstaking effort that yielded superior products. His conviction proved accurate; after Joseph's passing in 1954, his sons made the decision to continue producing shortbread using his original recipe.

As demand swelled, so did the company. By 1961, all three of James’ children—Joseph, James, and Marjorie—joined the family business, marking the emergence of the third generation of Walkers. By 1975, the company had outgrown its expanded bakery and transitioned to a custom-built factory, providing ample space to innovate and create products like Chocolate Chip Shortbread and specialty cookies.

In the 1970s, Joseph’s grandchildren undertook an ambitious path by exporting Walker's shortbread to over 60 countries, remaining faithful to the original recipe. Their commitment bore fruit as they garnered their first Queen’s Award for Export Achievement, one of three accolades recognizing exceptional British exporters within a decade.

Walkers steadfastly engaged with customers by trialing every new product at Aberlour's village shop, ensuring that products enjoyed worldwide received the villagers' approval first. The consistent quality and traditional recipes have positioned Walkers as the preferred choice for discerning customers and retailers alike. The brand's reputation flourishes daily, as dedicated fans relish classic shortbreads alongside innovative offerings like almond, ginger, and decadent chocolate-covered variations.

All products are presented in a distinctive red tartan wrapping, prominently featuring Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora MacDonald—icons of a romantic chapter of Scotland’s history that symbolize the tradition and dedication integral to every bite of Walker's shortbread. The all-natural quality and wellness of Walker's have earned numerous international accolades, including five prestigious Mondiale gold medals and the Food from Britain Innovation Award.

Today, Joseph's children and grandchildren have embraced modern changes while steadfastly adhering to his values and original recipe. As they inaugurated a new factory in Elgin for their sought-after range of shortbread cookies and biscuits, they maintained their commitment to utilizing only the finest ingredients—succulent fruits, aromatic spices, real chocolate chunks, and flavorful nuts—void of artificial additives.

In a legacy that continues to thrive, Joseph would undoubtedly take pride in knowing that his great-grandchildren are now the fourth generation upholding the Walker family tradition of producing "The world's classic pure butter shortbread." All natural ingredients, no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. Kosher OUD. Proudly made in Scotland.
